Until 1862, Muir of Ord was known as Tarradale. The settlement grew quickly after Thomas Telford built the Conon and Lovat Bridges in 1814.
These bridges opened overland routes through the area. Cattle drovers from across the north met here at the Muir trysts. These were large livestock markets held on flat land between the two rivers.
The Mill of Ord legalised its whisky production in 1838. It later became Glen Ord Distillery and still operates today. The Inverness and Ross-shire Railway arrived in 1862. The station was named Muir of Ord.
Over time, the village took the same name. The Tarradale title then faded. This history still affects property today. The annual agricultural show is held every August on land just outside the village. It brings thousands of visitors and continues the old market tradition.

The local health centre handles routine GP appointments. Specialist hospital care is available at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. bMajor supermarkets are available in nearby Dingwall and Inverness. This setup keeps daily routines practical without long journeys.
Muir of Ord is one of the few villages in this region with its own railway station. Direct trains run south to Inverness. They also run north along the Far North Line and west on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line.
Inverness city centre is around 13 miles south by road. The journey takes about 25 minutes by car. Dingwall is closer. It is roughly 6 miles away and takes under 15 minutes.
The A862 and A832 link the village to Beauly, Conon Bridge, and routes heading west. Inverness Airport is around 35 minutes by car.
